What are trailer couplings?

  • by

There are a variety of trailer couplings for sale currently, and they generally can be classified into three distinct types:

Rigid trailer coupling device
Detachable/removable trailer coupling device
Sway control coupling device.

Each of these types can be used in its individuality, with its own benefits and drawbacks.

The trailer coupling device, also known as a tow hitch, is fixed to the vehicle. The ball mount protrudes from behind. It’s visible at all times and usually less expensive to purchase over the two other kinds. But this type of coupling device is not authorized or legal when the ball mount hides the license plate of the vehicle. Another drawback is that it could be a nuisance when you’re hittingch-hooking up, and clothes may be soiled. Since there aren’t any moveable components, this product is simple to maintain and provides adequate protection during moving and parking.

The detachable coupling system consists of a support fixed to the vehicle beneath the bumper (fender US) and a removable mechanical ball mount. The benefit of this configuration is that it doesn’t affect design of your vehicle, and it is able to be easily removed and put away in the trunk (trunk US). The drawback is that it’s more costly and when the ball mount collects debris (salt as well as corrosion) it could create a problem because the surface must be cleaned.

The sway control device is like the detachable coupling because the ball mount is removed mechanically from the bumper or fender until it’s needed to be utilized. This configuration has the same benefits as the detachable coupling, but it’s not the same. The entire unit (ball mount) has to be stored inside the boot. An automated version of this coupling is available that allows the use of a push button to stop the swaying and leaving the driver without the need for intervention in any manner. The most pricey coupling available. Less expensive ones can be equipped with a control cable which locks the swaying by hand.

Due to the complexity of this system It is essential to maintain it properly as otherwise, problems could arise.

The rigid coupling is a great buy if you use it often and if the design of your vehicle isn’t an issue. If not, the detachable or sway control couplings are the best alternative. Make sure to not put grease on the coupling ball or the system for controlling sway will not function.
